The Mayonnaise Jar and the 2 Cups of Coffee

People often ask how I manage to do the things I do....
I heard this story a while ago... Hope you find it inspiring as much as I do!

The Mayonnaise Jar and the 2 Cups of Coffee

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 cups of coffee.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls size Rocks. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They replied "YES".

The professor then picked up a box of smaller pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly the pebbles rolled into the open areas between the Rocks. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They once again replied "Yes".

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous "yes."

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents of the 2 cups into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand.

The students laughed. As the laughter subsided the professor said "Now the cup is full" "I would like you to recognize that this jar represents your life.

The Rocks are the important things the big things -Your relationship with GOD, Your health, Your  well being, Your spouse!

The bigger Pebbles are the other things that really matter to you in you life such as your FAMILY! Friendship, your relatives and extended families, close friends, the ones you love.

The smaller Pebbles are your outer relationships, your colleges, your career or your job. The things you have to do in your life.

The sand is everything else–the small stuff." The material things such as your house, your car, your boat, the inanimate objects around you, all the things that have no feelings, the negative people and objects in your life, all the things that steal your time and energy."

He continued. "If you fill the jar with sand first then there is no room for the Rocks or the Pebbles,
like wise if you fill the jar with Pebbles, there is still no room for Rocks, put the big Rocks in first and fit the rest of the Pebbles in and then the sand around them.

The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the bigger things that are Really important to YOU"

If everything else was lost and only the small stuff remained, Sand and Pebbles your life would still be full, but full of what?

Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness, spend time with GOD, pray, look after your self, take time to get medical checkups. Look after your spouse, take them out to dinner, Play with your children, Spend Quality time with your close friends and family. There will always be time to clean the house, do the garden, fix the car.

Decide NOW in your life what are Your Rocks what are Your Pebbles and beware of the Sand. Take care of those Rocks and those Pebbles, those things that really matter to you. Set your priorities and remember the rest is just Sand."

The Class was silent for a moment, one of the students raised their hand and inquired "What about the coffee what does that represented." The professor smiled, "I’m glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, weather it be with Rocks, Pebbles, sand or an even balance of all three, there is always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend."

My birthday highlights

I would say the highlight of my birthday was picnic with my choir kiddos...

This was not planned.. I brought cupcakes etc for choir...
Then I forgot that it's 5th Sunday so they didn't have to be in the class with me :-)...

But they wanted to have a picnic... so we went to the lawn

We started with popcorn prayer.... You know when everyone can pop a prayer like popcorn..
Then I closed after no more prayer popped..

I was SOOOO BLESSED to hear their heartfelt prayers!!
They were blessing ME!
How awesome is that to have such opportunities to serve these kiddos every week!

The night before my birthday we took the kids to Piada...
They LOVE the chips and bread sticks...

Of course you couldn't start a birthday without good breakfast :-) ...
from where else :-)  See the "M" wrappers :-)

My dedicated choir kiddos wanted to sing after they finished their "sugar loaded breakfast"
Sorry parents!

I think I might do some more of this outdoor singing.
It was good!  They projected their voices more than inside.
The boys also made background rhythm with rocks!

All those time little brother participated by sitting quietly playing angry birds!
Didn't I say he is addicted to that game and wants it for his birthday theme!

Then we ate dinner at our favorite restaurant with my buddy Ginger and her family...
Dinner was delicious!

I made a cake for my birthday... I know I know... I was asking the same question too :-) Even G's husband said he never see a birthday person bringing their own cake...

Well for several reason... This blackforest cake is my dear hubby's and Ginger's favorite cake of all the cake I have made... I wanted a chocolate cake as well... So I made one yesterday, originally to take it to small group Bible study... But then they cancelled small group :-( ... Those in my small group... see what you all missed yesterday...

So then we decided to call G and her family to go to dinner together!

Now this is what the cake supposed to look like!

This was how the cake looked like when we arrived at the restaurant!

It was super hot here yesterday!

I already put it in the car then my dear hubby could not find his wallet!

So it melted and slided all over the place :-)

I used whipped cream icing so it was soft anyway to begin with :-)

But it was still good!
A blessed day indeed!

I posted some old pictures of my FIRST birthday yesterday.
If you missed it... Here is the post:  MY FIRST BIRTHDAY pictures

THANK YOU!!! for all the birthday wishes....
I tried to count my blessings yesterday but I ran out of paper!

Have a blessed and joyous memorial day!!

Old pictures (My 1st birthday!)

It's my birthday today!

I found old pictures few days ago...I think it would be fun to share them with you!!

Many of old pictures were damaged during a huge flood back home that took many of my parents' possession... But when I went home I was able to take some pictures back to the States...

My parents wedding.... in 1975
All Because Two People Fall in love...

My first birthday!  My parents looked so HAPPY!! I looked confused :-) LOL
MISS YOU BOTH!!!

Opening Birthday present with my OMA!
My grandmother Marcia who LOVES the LORD so much!!!

Many of you know that I had always wanted to be a doctor...

This picture is a proof that it may have started as young as 1 year old :-)

See those books??? They were my Dad's...
I have always been surrounded by books...
It looks similar at my office today...
If you have ever been at my home.. You know that books are EVERYWHERE too!
THANK YOU papi... for introducing the wonders of BOOK to me at an early age!

I found many old pictures.
I LOVE looking at them...
Yet, it sad at times to think how far apart I am from them!

I wonder sometimes...
Why God called us to live far from our family.

But then I would be reminded that I am so blessed as well....
Because GOD has given me MULTIPLES Families and Friends!!!

THANK YOU for making today a joyous one!!!
I had sand in my eyes this morning reading all your birthday wishes on my fb wall.
I got another sand now as I am writing this...

How blessed I am to have ALL OF YOU! in my life...
As my families... as my friends...

Obedience when it does not make sense (part 2)

So I have been learning about obedience even when it doesn't make sense!
This post was triggered by what I was convicted of in part 1I decided to zoom out and take a look at events and things that happened in my life that showed that! This is one of them...

We lived in a house half the size of our current one.
That particular weekend it was PACKED!
My brother and sister in law lived with us
We hosted a new freshman and her father for few days until the dorm open.
Dear friends from NYC stayed with us for a wedding happening that weekend.
The “bride-to-be” also lived with us.

So that particular Friday was a very busy FRIDAY!
I was the wedding coordinator and I was 8 months pregnant.

That Friday morning I was running around campus with the new freshman and her Dad.
We had to get her “checked in” at the International student office.

I noticed a petite, tired-looking young girl with a huge suitcase in front of us.
She did her business. Then we did ours…
I walked out and saw her sat on the stair in front of the room
She looked lost, scared and confused.

So I asked if she needed help. She said she was given an address for a youth hostel but don't know how to get there...
I wasn’t familiar with the address.
I called my dear hubby.
He said that is not a good area…
So I called the number…
No one answered…
Not a good feeling…

I said, let me drive you there…

Off we went.
The building did not look very safe…The area was scary…
I was not comfortable leaving a little 16 years old Japanese girl with very limited English there…

So now what do I do?
My brain started spinning…
Thinking of a billion of things that I still have to finish for the wedding…
I think you know by now that I am "last minute" "procrastinator" kind of girl !

And all the people that were already at my house…CAN NOT add more... We are already fighting for the bathroom .... And did I mentioned I usually is SUPER CRANKY when I am pregnant... Seriously I told my friends to stay away before I make enemies... Don't believe me? Ask my sister and brother in law! How ugly I can be when I am pregnant :-)(sorry guys!! :-) )

But God was saying “Take her home” So very clearly!!
So I did…
Didn’t make sense at a time…I did not have an empty bed…
I could have dropped her off at a better hotel somewhere as she requested…

Then I would still already done my part of "helping her"... Got her to a safe hotel was good enough...

But I decided to obey and took her home…

She stayed with us for few days…
Over the course of her 4 years stay here in the U.S she has gotten to know MANY Indonesian Christians.
She has blessed us beyond measure…

We visited her in 2008.
I could not be more humbled by the mature career woman she has become!
What a blessing it is to see her blossomed into such a beautiful young woman!

That was the ONLY time I ever took a stranger home.
Even though I am on campus almost everyday now... I do not scout for lost freshmen :-)...

I believe there are so many things we don’t understand in this life…
Why certain people crosses our path…

But it is NOT our job to understand the reason… As it is OUR JOB to OBEY….

Many of you reading this that knows and agree that Rina has blessed us beyond measure…

SO MANY friendships bloom between her and many of our Indonesian Christian friends…

Because we obeyed she was saved.

She was the young lady that hosted us in Japan on this post….

Lesson learnt and what I hope you to take away is to obey and listen very carefully to what God wants you to do throughout the day... to the people you encounter!!! He has a plan for you and for them!!!
OBEY that still whisper or loud voice in your heart when HE told you something... Even if it doesn't make sense at the time to other people... It is BETWEEN YOU AND GOD!!

Next event was when I said "Yes" to marry my dear hubby! Which totally DOES NOT make sense.. We NEVER dated... (just good friends in the ministry)... and when he asked, we had not seen each other for over 5 years!! (Perhaps I will share that "love" story someday :-)  )

I said "no" at first but so glad that GOD convinced me to say yes! LOVE THAT MAN!!!

“Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the LORD?" (part 1)

Yesterday I was peaceful after I talked to my dear hubby.
He said we can go to Joplin to help.
My dear hubby who is a careful, detail-oriented, logical man.
He who think about simple stuff 1000000x said "YES"
to go and drop stuff that people so urgently needed…

I know someone there so we are not going in blindly.
So we had a plan...
Then few people talked to me about more “effective” way of helping.
Perhaps just use the online donation link!

Click the “easy button”
Click submit.

No hard long drive with a cranky 8 years old!
Yes, we were going to take him.
We think he needs it...

What if that "easier way" is not what God wants us to do?
How arrogant are we to think that the sole purpose for the trip would be “TO HELP!”
What if WE NEED HELP! Perhaps God wants to open our eyes to something.

Yes, we can send money with a click of a button…
Yes that would mean more people would be helped

BUT WHAT IF

We miss HIS lesson by trying to be efficient?
We miss the opportunity of sharing the gospel directly to someone because we can buy more toilet paper with the gas money…

Sometimes what God tells us to do does not make sense.
I had never felt this strong about going into a disaster EVER in my life
Never went to any disaster area for that matter...
Those that know me know that it is not my cup of tea.(I prefer coffee anyway)!

This morning reading that chapter in 1 Samuel 15 convicted me.
God told Saul to kill and destroy everything that belong to the Amalekites
But Saul saved all the “good ones” ….

I can understand this…Can't you?  Especially us "mommies on the budget"
It makes sense doesn’t it?
Why waste the good ones when we can use them?…
In fact we can even give them to GOD (through sacrifice)…
What a noble purpose that would be...

But God wasn’t happy…
He wasn’t thinking of mere “efficiencies” and “recycling” for that matter…
He just wants us to OBEY! Even if what HE asked us to do doesn’t seem to make sense at the time…

As I was driving this morning.
The Lord brought to my mind an event that happened 10 years ago.
When God told me to do something that did not make sense.
I obey and has been blessed by it...

That would be part (2)....

We're floating down the river to the O H I O

This past weekend was a very fun weekend... It was my "other daughter" 5th birthday. This cute little girl claimed that she is my daughter way back when she was probably 3 years old. This year she wanted a princess cake and I made one for her. Bittersweet birthday as the family is going to move out of the U.S soon :-( I will miss her so terribly!

Then we went to the water park on Sunday afternoon. It was so much fun!

Little brother posed by the lazy river

We went with our good friends and we had so much fun!

OFF we go...
We're floating down the river. We're floating down below. We're floating down the river to the O H I O
( We sang a Kindermusik song as we floated down the lazy river)....

Mei2 just keep swimming... swimming...swimming...

It's mei2 first time swimming at one of our friend's daughter birthday party...
At first she wasn't so sure she likes it.  Actually we had to really persuade and convince her that it is okay....

She did not like the splashing too much. Didn't blame her!

Then, she did not realize that daddy was not holding her! She might actually realize but did not care? I don't know....

After about 15 min or so, she was so happy floating around and refused to come out....

What a brave little girl!

Fun weekend with friends

Saturday was a FUN weekend... Perfect weather, not too hot and not too cold. Thank you Lord!

Our new friends came to visit and fellowship with us.

Brandy and I met at the women Bible Study... First time I met her, I went home and told dear hubby," I met a lady who sounded so like me...." Through her sharing and my sharing during Bible study we felt that we have the same type of personalities, struggles, etc... So funny... Brandy went home and told her husband the same thing.

So we invited her and her family over. It was SOOOOO MUCH FUN! She has 8 kids. I definitely need to learn some patience and grace from her!

They brought bubbles and mei2 is loving it!

It's so cute how she tried to blow. She put her mouth so close and concentrated hard.

Of course brother enjoyed the bubbles as well.

They had a blast! Brother and mei mei had fun chasing bubbles and popping them.

We ended the perfect day by eating strawberry with nutella!! How awesome is that!

We enjoyed each other families so much that we are planning to go camping together...

Thank you LORD for bringing new friends into our lives

Brandy brought me a beautiful hanging basket that you will see if I finish working on the front yard.
